The campus dining draft

Pablo Lacayo | Tuesday, March 21, 2023

I have half a semester left at Notre Dame. Time seems to be flying by and in the blink of an eye, I already see myself sitting in the stadium trying to stay focused throughout the commencement ceremony. This semester has been one of intense meditation and reflection: what I did and did not do

The everything people

Jack Sirianni | Monday, March 6, 2023

With the ending of my Tuesday class at 10:45 in DeBart and the rumblings of my stomach, I leave the classroom into the swarm of students in the hallway that make me feel like I am a freshman in high school again. Escaping the stampede with most of my limbs intact, I rush outside to

The walk back from SDH

Maggie Eastland | Monday, March 6, 2023

“You work in the basement of South Dining Hall? That’s so far from P-Dub,” friends say — words languishing with pity.  I haven’t quite nailed my response yet, but consider this my rebuttal: The 10-minute walk back to Pasquerilla West Hall at 4 a.m. is one of my favorites in the world. The sidewalk tiles

People-watching in SDH

Kathryn Muchnick | Monday, February 27, 2023

I know the South vs. North debate is a bit tired. We all have our opinions, and most of us refuse to budge. We agonize over food quality, dining layout, chair comfort, TV access, even the illusive criteria of “vibes,” but I think there is one category we neglect in these overwrought conversations. I must

Dining hall despair

Jonah Tran | Monday, February 27, 2023

The dining hall food is terrible. There, I had to rip the Band-Aid off. I will not sugarcoat the quality of the dining hall food. On the whole, it is simply bad. Before I begin listing off my grievances, I need to establish a few things. My opinions are based off my experience predominately at

Ask The Observer: Are grab-n-go point values fair?

Maggie Eastland | Monday, November 21, 2022

Notre Dame’s grab-and-go lives up to its name for convenience, but some students are questioning how the point-based prices are determined. Open between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., the grab-n-go locations in North and South dining halls offer quick meal options for students on the run, including snacks, drinks and pre-packaged sandwiches. Each swipe is

Empty silverware holders, no late-night quesadillas: Notre Dame feels effects of nationwide labor shortage

Maggie Eastland and Maxwell Feldmann | Wednesday, November 17, 2021

A worker shortage is rippling across the country, and the Notre Dame campus is also feeling its impact. Whiteboards encouraging workers to join the Campus Dining staff and shortened Taco Bell hours highlight the underlying labor shortage on campus. The problem is exacerbated by both nationwide labor shortages and lower levels of student employment. “As

The sprinkles situation

Aidan O'Malley | Friday, September 24, 2021

Over the past two years and — *checks watch* — one month, I have written quite literally thousands of words in the pages of The Observer. As if that wasn’t unhinged enough, I wrote most of them with no expectation that anyone I know or love would read them. Yes, journalism is a public service,

From the Archives: The perils and promises of campus dining

Uyen Le, Spencer Kelly, Maggie Clark and Sofia CrimiVaroli | Monday, April 12, 2021

A universal part of the Notre Dame experience is students’ strong feelings concerning the dining halls. Whether you prefer the comfy booths of North Dining Hall or the classic wooden tables of South, allegiances run deeply. Regardless of opinions on dining hall superiority, we can all agree that the dining halls are often sites of

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
