Fifteen seconds for fame

Willoughby Thom | Friday, September 23, 2022

Music has become disposable. One day, you hear a new hit song, and then, a month later, it has vanished off the face of the earth. While this is not an entirely new phenomenon, the world of music has shifted greatly over the last decade. Instead of relying on record sales, downloads or touring to

Harry Styles did it again

Allison Thornton | Thursday, April 7, 2022

On March 23, Harry Styles announced the release date and album cover art for his upcoming 13 track album “Harry’s House” on May 20, 2022. Right away, I just knew the vibes from this album would be amazing. When I first looked at the album cover, I could tell it would be very different from

Experiencing Joni Mitchell’s ‘Blue’ in the age of streaming

Maggie Clark | Wednesday, February 9, 2022

Last week, folk singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell said “[she stands] with Neil Young and the global scientific and medical communities” in her decision to remove her music from Spotify. This decision came after a particularly controversial episode of the “Joe Rogan Experience” was released on Spotify. In an open letter published on Mitchell’s website, various medical

‘Butter’: BTS’s legacy may be ruining music charts

Alejandro Mujica | Wednesday, September 1, 2021

In today’s music industry, all that matters is the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100. Everybody wants it, and fans are willing to do anything to get their fave song up there. We have seen Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Jason Derulo and many others employ questionable tactics to achieve the coveted prize, but up

Thank you for sharing your Spotify Wrapped

Colleen Fischer | Friday, December 4, 2020

The first thing I realized when I watched my first Bob Dylan interview was that he talked like my uncle who grew up in the ’60s and ’70s. Their Midwestern accents were paired with a syncopated rhythm and constant mystery that had me hanging on every word. I’ve noticed similarities between people I know and

Video didn’t kill the radio star

Willoughby Thom | Thursday, October 29, 2020

The way in which we listen to music has changed dramatically. It has developed from a physical, tangible experience into one based on accessibility and convenience. With the streaming revolution, people have ignored the act of listening to music and focused on music’s accessibility. We have become so accustomed to pushing a button and letting

Running down a beat: A not-so-definitive running playlist

Nia Sylva | Friday, September 18, 2020

I don’t know about you, but spending the last few months in quarantine really made me appreciate the outdoors — the view out the window, walks around the neighborhood with my siblings and parents and, most significantly, my daily runs. Before the shutdown, I preferred to use the treadmill. With gyms closed, of course, that

Willoughby’s perfect playlist

Willoughby Thom | Monday, August 24, 2020

Last week I decided to ask my friends on Instagram if they wanted me to make them a playlist. This idea was born because of two things: boredom and the love of music. Honestly, I didn’t expect many people to respond. Perhaps a few close friends would reach out in support. To my surprise, I

I DM’ed my favorite artist: How the personal becomes relatable

Colleen Fischer | Monday, January 20, 2020

I was making a playlist for a friend and procrastinating packing for my semester away in Washington D.C. that I was anxious about, when I came across Bug Hunter’s music. I added it to the playlist because he had a funny name, it had a fun melody and the lyrics made me smile. This sentiment

In the age of streaming

Ryan Israel | Wednesday, December 4, 2019

A lot — and I mean a lot — of good music was released in the 2010s. Genres were blended, stars were born and social media gave us all an up-close view of the action. But the decade also saw a massive shift in the way we consume music. With the rise of services such

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
