Jack Concannon | Friday, November 29, 2019

The Stanford Cardinal are preparing to wrap up what has been a difficult season on Saturday playing host to the Irish. The program will go bowl-ineligible for the first time in 11 years and has failed to win eight games for the first time since David Shaw was hired in 2011. He finds himself in

Adams: If you want Navy off the schedule, get over yourself

Hayden Adams | Friday, November 15, 2019

Every Notre Dame football season features a few matchups between the Irish and their rivals. Whenever those games rear their heads, it brings to mind memories of games and seasons gone by. Whenever the Irish gear up for archrival USC, the older generation may remember when the Trojans spoiled Notre Dame’s title hopes in 1964

Notre Dame posts second-half comeback to punch tickets to Final Four

Elizabeth Greason | Tuesday, April 2, 2019

CHICAGO — As a great 21st-century philosopher once said, “The third quarter is ours and will always be ours.” That philosopher was the one and only Irish senior guard Marina Mabrey, ever-confident in her team’s ability to pull through, no matter the circumstances, whether down by 12 at halftime in the 2018 national championship — when she

Joe Everett | Monday, October 1, 2018

The date was Nov. 25, 2017. The scene was Notre Dame versus Stanford in Palo Alto, California. The time was 1:23 left in the third quarter. Notre Dame’s Justin Yoon had just kicked a field goal to put the Irish ahead 20-17, and the Irish went back on defense — one quarter away from a

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly addressed many of the looming questions heading into the team’s matchup against Stanford on Saturday in Thursday’s press conference, most notably, the quarterback question.  “We’ve prepared both quarterbacks,” Kelly said of senior Brandon Wimbush and junior Ian Book. “They’re both ready to play and you know, we think that

Big game this weekend

Andrew Rebholz | Wednesday, September 26, 2018

Truly, this Saturday could be the game day to end all game days. As a senior, I was stoked to see my Irish stand up against those Wolverines and come out victorious — I’d call that the highlight of my college football experience, even after last year’s smashing of Southern Cal. However, I do think

Greason: This season cannot be considered a success

Elizabeth Greason | Sunday, November 26, 2017

STANFORD, Calif. — I’m not mad, I’m just disappointed. If you had told me at the start of the season I would be disappointed in a team with a 9-3 record, I don’t know that I would have believed you. In fact, I predicted this team would finish the season 9-3 at the start of the

Irish unravel in final quarter against Cardinal in double-digit loss

Elizabeth Greason | Sunday, November 26, 2017

STANFORD, Calif. — Things were looking good for the Irish there for a minute. And then everything fell apart. Take your pick of the plays that actually marked the end for Notre Dame (9-3) in its 38-20 loss to Stanford. There was the first of junior quarterback Brandon Wimbush’s two interceptions. There was the fumble on

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
