Men’s basketball news and notes Notre Dame head men’s basketball coach Mike Brey communicated with Tom Noie of ND Insider and the South Bend Tribune to discuss scheduling for the upcoming season. Firstly, according to Noie, Notre Dame will not make a return trip to Washington D.C. this season to take on Howard. The Irish

Cooley, Beachem earn shot at NBA rosters

Observer Sports Staff | Friday, August 18, 2017

It has been rough going for former Irish players trying to make the NBA this summer. Notre Dame graduated only two players from the 2016-2017 roster — former captains V.J. Beachem and Steve Vasturia — and both have attempted to make their ways onto NBA rosters. Beachem, who averaged 14.5 points and 4.1 rebounds per

Colson, Farrell lead Irish to finals of ACC tournament

Marek Mazurek | Friday, May 19, 2017

Notre Dame gets no respect. If you regularly follow Notre Dame basketball, that’s a self-evident fact, and this year was no different. The media picked the Irish to finish sixth in the ACC despite coming off back-to-back Elite Eight appearances — the only team in the country able to say that. But if you follow

Mazurek: Notre Dame needs to look ahead, not back, to become elite

Marek Mazurek | Saturday, March 18, 2017

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Let’s make 2015 the year one of the new era of Notre Dame basketball. That 2015 Irish squad, in just its second year in the ACC, won the conference tournament and took maybe the best college basketball team of all time to the full 40 minutes in the Elite Eight. Since then, the basketball

V.J. Beachem, Steve Vasturia look to get back on track against Mountaineers

Marek Mazurek | Friday, March 17, 2017

BUFFALO, N.Y. — One day after its 60-58 victory over Princeton, Notre Dame is back to business. Now that the glow of winning has dissipated, one thing is clear: The Irish will have to play a lot better offensively to beat West Virginia on Saturday. The Irish (26-9, 12-6 ACC) scored well below their season

Irish look to enter NCAA tournament with ‘an edge’

Marek Mazurek | Tuesday, March 14, 2017

When it comes to the NCAA tournament, seeding only means so much. Often, a hungrier team can pull off an upset if the higher seed doesn’t play with fire. As a No. 5 seed, Notre Dame hopes to stave off No. 12 seed Princeton’s upset attempt while potentially pulling off an upset of its own

Irish fall at Louisville, will be No. 3 seed in ACC tournament

Alex Carson | Saturday, March 4, 2017

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Irish head coach Mike Brey loves to talk about getting three stops in a row — he calls them “kills.” And with his No. 19 Notre Dame squad trailing No. 8 Louisville 64-58 with 1:58 to play, it looked as if the Irish would need one to keep their ACC regular season title aspirations alive.

Irish pick up win on Senior Night over Boston College

Manuel De Jesus | Thursday, March 2, 2017

No. 19 Notre Dame would not be denied in honoring its senior captains V.J. Beachem and Steve Vasturia with style. The Irish (23-7, 12-5 ACC) picked up their sixth win in a row after defeating Boston College for the second time this season, 82-66. Both seniors were instrumental in Notre Dame’s victory scoring a combined

Irish look forward to final home game of regular season

Marek Mazurek | Wednesday, March 1, 2017

No. 5 North Carolina has clinched the ACC regular season title. Everything else is up for grabs. Specifically, No. 19 Notre Dame has just two more regular season games to claim a top-four seed in the ACC and a double bye in the conference tournament. Currently, the Irish (22-7, 11-5 ACC) are tied for second place with

Colson scores 33 as Irish topple Florida State at home

Marek Mazurek | Monday, February 13, 2017

Junior forward Bonzie Colson holds a special place in the hearts of Irish fans for playing the role of an undersized big man. In his 2 1/2 years at Notre Dame, Colson has managed to produce double-doubles and give the Irish solid minutes in big games. But even the most optimistic Notre Dame (19-7, 8-5 ACC) fan

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
