‘The Metamorphosis of Birds’ is a visual Masterpiece

Rose Androwich | Monday, November 7, 2022

Catarina Vasconcelos’s “The Metamorphosis of Birds” tells a beautiful story of her family life. Vasconcelos’ visual storytelling further showcases her talent. Caterina wrote, directed and appeared in this documentary. Within the images in the movie, the importance of visuals becomes clear. The concept of being aesthetically overwhelmed provides a sharp contrast to the low production

A whisper of a thrill

Letter to the Editor | Tuesday, February 15, 2022

Dear reader,  Good morning, good afternoon, good evening and good night!  I hope that you are doing well and are having the time of your life, since that too is how I felt that one Thursday morning, a few weeks ago. After all, in this short story, I was he and she was her. I

‘Brightside’ made me sad: How the new Lumineers album failed me

Anna Falk | Friday, January 21, 2022

As the seasons change throughout the year, so do people. In art, this is an important aspect to consider.  My life has been centered around music for as long as I can remember. Throughout this time, I’ve seen what and who I listen to change as I discover new artists and as the artists I

Why we write

Tom Naatz | Friday, May 1, 2020

I’ve gotten a range of responses to my articles and columns for The Observer. Some of them qualified as unearned praise. A Facebook commenter — referring to a column on religiosity — angrily asked no one in particular why I was allowed to take communion at Mass. The cake goes to a man who told

So, what is your story?

Krista Lourdes Akiki | Friday, February 7, 2020

“We tell stories in order to feel at home in the universe.”— Roger Bingham. Stories are what make us human. They’re the native language our minds have been wired to understand since the beginning of time. Indeed, we love stories. As kids, we would beg for one more bedtime fairytale. As adults, most of our

We are storytellers

Drew Lischke | Tuesday, April 9, 2019

Human beings are storytellers. We’re meant to be storytellers. This is true whether you tell stories with arbitrary (and conventional) vocalizations or the random brush of hair follicles depositing pigment on canvas. I’ve come to this realization maybe only due to my immediate surroundings. In the land of biblical folklore and oral story-telling traditions that

Hanna Kennedy | Thursday, March 22, 2018

Colin Meloy and his group of Portland, Oregon, storytellers are back. No strangers to clever and complex folk, The Decemberists decided to take a new approach on their latest release. “I’ll Be Your Girl,” the group’s eighth album in 17 years, invites producer John Congleton on board and the result is a new sound for

Nicole Caratas | Thursday, October 26, 2017

For author Margaret Atwood, known for novels such as “The Handmaid’s Tale,” stories and story telling are a quintessential part of the human experience. Wednesday, she explained the value of a liberal arts education in the present day. “It’s something that the human race has always done,” she said. “They’ve not always done algebra. … The

Never stop writing

Kathryn Marshall | Friday, May 19, 2017

Thank you, Observer, for shaping me into a storyteller. Stories capture the significance of the world around us by taking snapshots of everyday events and conversations, whether they take place in a lecture hall or at a demonstration downtown. They entertain us, they inform us and even more importantly, they challenge us. They challenge us

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
