To scoot or not to scoot?

Jonah Tran | Tuesday, August 29, 2023

Notre Dame is a big university. Spanning 1,250 acres with about 170 buildings, our campus may at times appear as a ground for hiking rather than strolling. First-years especially know all too well the laborious, time-consuming, daily walks from North Quad to DeBartolo Hall. And so, how does one overcome the locomotion issue? Scooters. You

Isabella Rogers | Wednesday, November 16, 2022

Editor’s note: This column discusses eating disorders and mental health concerns. The mental health crisis in college athletics is an epidemic growing more fatal every day. In the spring of 2022, it felt like almost every week, there was news of a student-athlete taking his or her own life. Even outside the more extreme situations,

A call to the Leprechaun Legion

Letter to the Editor | Friday, February 14, 2020

Dear Leprechaun Legion, Notre Dame’s reputation and prowess in the collegiate athletics world speaks for itself. From the endless number of conference and national championships to the esteemed group of student-athletes who have made the transition to professional careers and to those who are making a difference every day in society, the caliber of the

Think before you tweet

Thomas Diehl | Tuesday, February 4, 2020

Sitting at home on my couch, watching the Notre Dame basketball game against Indiana, I could not help but continually yell at the television. Things like, “Juwan, why would you do that?!” and, “Hubb is a turnover machine,” flew out of my mouth at a constant rate. Was there extra pressure for Notre Dame to

It is about time student athletes get paid

Charlotte Edmonds | Friday, September 13, 2019

Well, it’s a new school year, so naturally we have to fight the same old, unsettled battles. This one — the fight over whether or not to compensate college athletes — has finally taken a new twist, with the State of California leading the charge. Little background: the NCAA considers itself a league of amateurs,

Mary Steurer | Friday, April 26, 2019

Eight universities are thought to have participated in March’s college admissions scandal and now face investigation by the U.S. Department of Education. According to federal prosecutors, William “Rick” Singer, the man behind the scam, bribed college coaches and other officials to illegally secure admission for his clients’ children. Singer pled guilty to racketeering, among other charges, in

Socks can be the greatest gift ever

Letter to the Editor | Wednesday, April 4, 2018

For Christmas this past year, a family member of mine got everyone socks as a gift — now I know what you’re thinking, because it’s exactly what I thought when I unwrapped the present — “oh … um, thanks … socks.” That initial emotion was short-lived and I was filled with remorse when I explored

The NCAA entitled

Stephen Raab | Tuesday, March 31, 2015

The end of March brings with it the NCAA basketball tournament. The Sweet Sixteen, the Elite Eight, the Final Four — it’s an American tradition like no other. Notre Dame’s out, of course, but no matter who’s playing it’s always fun to relax with the guys and watch the rhythm of the game. (As a

Fr. Ted stressed academic integrity in athletics

Brian Hartnett | Monday, March 2, 2015

Sixty years ago, well before the advent of ESPN, conference realignment and a playoff, the college football system faced many of the same questions it does today regarding the role of student-athletes in university life, the balance between academics and athletics and the need for institutional integrity in the face of big-time college sports. Sixty

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
