How does knowing the end affect the journey?

Alysa Guffey | Friday, March 3, 2023

On Sept. 12, 2019, I achieved greatness. I wrote my first news article for The Observer.  The 618-word article was arguably the most researched, well-crafted story The Observer had ever seen. The story offered a behind-the-scenes, intimate look into one of the most beloved traditions at Our Lady’s University: the annual Lewis House of Pancakes

Nothing will put a damper on a bright-eyed college student like the journalism industry, but here’s the upside. I’ve compiled a list of 15 amazing uses for newspapers. Hint: The final reason is the most absurd of them all. 1. Dorm room fly swatter Nothing works better than a rolled-up newspaper. 2. Annoying roommate swatter

Not going anywhere

Adriana Perez | Friday, February 25, 2022

So, I guess this is goodbye. After a year of serving as Editor-in-Chief of The Observer, I can say it has been nothing short of an adventure. For my last Inside Column, I thought I’d take a self-indulgent trip down memory lane. Bear with me, if you will. My journey at The Observer began when

Last Thursday, leaders of the independent student newspaper The Battalion at Texas A&M University were given an ultimatum by their university’s president: Stop printing immediately and be subsumed under a new department of journalism, or lose resources like its office space and longtime faculty advisor. The student leadership and faculty advisor of the 129-year-old publication

Teach your children

Mary Ellen Woods | Thursday, January 13, 2022

Late last year, the Washington Post ran columns on the decline of local journalism — news deserts, as they called it — and the likely consequences. In fact, the entire Dec. 5, 2021, issue of their weekly magazine was devoted to the topic. Margaret Sullivan, media columnist for the Post, sounded the alarm: “The demise

For instance, in 2015, The Observer broke the news of Fr. Ted Hesburgh’s death to the world. And this year, our coverage of the pandemic and campus life

Adriana Perez | Monday, March 8, 2021

If there is anything I have learned in the past year, it is that life is unpredictable. I know this is not groundbreaking —  by now, all of humanity has had plenty of time to come to this same realization. Around a year ago, almost to the day, we were all leaving for spring break

Letter to the Editor | Monday, November 18, 2019

On Nov. 5, former Attorney General Jeff Sessions spoke at Northwestern University. As you can imagine, a large group of students came out to protest the man who had been appointed and eventually removed from his position by Donald Trump. The student-run newspaper, The Daily Northwestern, sent one reporter to cover the speech, another to

A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
