Summertime Selections

Mike Donovan, Ryan Israel, Dessi Gomez and Jim Moster | Tuesday, April 30, 2019

Springtime is sweeping through South Bend (sort of) but, with summertime on the horizon, the spring will soon be swept away. That’s okay with us. We have our sunglasses, plenty of sunscreen and a few things we’re really excited about for after school lets out.   Hip-hop’s stars come out By Ryan Israel, Associate Scene

Do it for the jokes

Colleen Fischer | Wednesday, October 3, 2018

“For Narnia!” Peter screamed this as he attacked the White Witch in Narnia. These are the sort of moments that create battle cries. Cries that motivate armies and encourage sacrifice. Moments of great adversary, and great bravery. Moments of battlefields and fairytales. My moment was far from this. I worked at an overnight summer camp

Puzzling summer

“I have measured my life in coffee spoons.” — T.S. Eliot Much as Eliot felt the need to verbalize his frustration with his place in the universe through the minute lens in which his anxious protagonist was forced to view his own life, I would like to try and summarize MY recent experience with the

A listening turtle

Nora McGreevy | Wednesday, August 22, 2018

I was sitting near the edge of the dock, dipping my toes tentatively into the warm lake water, when a dinosaur appeared. A mossy rock came to life, the massive creature — maybe a yard or so long from tail to beak, a size that would increase with every retelling of the event — swam up

Scene Selections: Summer recap

Nora McGreevy, Charlie Kenney, Nicholas Ottone, Ryan Israel and Carlos De Loera | Tuesday, August 21, 2018

Read on for a glimpse into the arts and culture that Scene’s writers loved this summer.   “Brooklyn 99,” resurrected By Nora McGreevy,

Summer service program promotes community through service

Mary Steurer | Tuesday, August 21, 2018

In contrast to summers spent interning or studying abroad, this summer saw a multitude of Notre Dame students devote their time to serving communities in need. The Summer Service Learning Program, or SSLP, is a volunteering program aimed to educate students on Catholic social tradition through service to marginalized populations. Ben Wilson, director of SSLP,

Scene’s Selections: a summertime forecast

Mike Donovan, Nora McGreevy, Hanna Kennedy and Ryan Israel | Tuesday, May 1, 2018

In mere days, you’ll crawl out of your hole, shower, wash your clothes and open your eyes wide for the first time in months. It burns! The sun! Pain! Society! All that jazz. Jazz! Then, you’ll realize. It’s summer! Oh no. It’s summer. Shhh. There there. Tuck away your worries. You don’t have to spend

Escape with George Ezra’s ‘Staying at Tamara’s’

Hanna Kennedy | Tuesday, April 10, 2018

After the release of his first studio album in 2014, George Ezra jetted off to Barcelona to craft his follow-up. Forgoing glamorous hotels and glitzy lodgings, Ezra found his inspiration renting an Airbnb from the Tamara of the album’s title. The album, “Staying at Tamara’s,” embraces the warm, relaxed feeling of summer travel lending every

‘What did you do this summer?’

Letter to the Editor | Monday, September 11, 2017

After high school, summer ceases to be summer. Now that we’re all crazily motivated college students trying to make the most of the opportunities afforded to us, summer is a dearly precious few weeks in which we can learn some things outside (or in) the classroom, build our resumes and maybe do some traveling to

A magical tradition

Courtney Becker | Monday, August 28, 2017

For the past 10 years I’ve had the same summer tradition. Every year, as soon as July rolls around, I pick up “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” and make my way steadily through the seven books that still amaze me even after reading them so many times. It all started in 2007, when I

A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
