Tame Impala resurrects with ‘The Slow Rush’

Renee Pierson | Wednesday, February 19, 2020

After five years of miserable dormancy, Tame Impala has returned with a matured sound on its fourth LP, “The Slow Rush.” Frontman Kevin Parker guides us through a psychedelic journey from past to future, even framing the album with songs titled “One More Year” and “One More Hour” to further emphasize the overarching theme of

In the age of streaming

Ryan Israel | Wednesday, December 4, 2019

A lot — and I mean a lot — of good music was released in the 2010s. Genres were blended, stars were born and social media gave us all an up-close view of the action. But the decade also saw a massive shift in the way we consume music. With the rise of services such

Pond’s ‘Tasmania’ meets shallow expectations

Ethan Utley | Thursday, March 21, 2019

Perth Australia’s Pond, one of today’s most popular psychedelic pop bands, is currently rekindling the style of the band’s 70’s psych-rock counterparts. Having released eight full-length albums since their debut with 2009’s “Psychedelic Mango” Pond has been awfully prolific over the course of the past decade. Unfortunately, the volume of Pond’s studio output pales in

Deerhunter covers new ground with ‘Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared?’

Ethan Utley | Wednesday, January 30, 2019

Deerhunter has been called everything but an average indie-rock band. Lead singer and songwriter Bradford Cox is about as enigmatic as they come, and the music he creates is no exception. Pairing playful guitar and animated melodies with abstract lyrics and ghastly instrumentals, Cox has perhaps the most unique sound in today’s mainstream indie-rock scene.

Big fish, even bigger Pond

Cynthia Tran | Friday, November 2, 2018

Last Thursday night, a sprightly earth fairy, a grizzly tree-like man, a gleaming extraterrestrial being and their babysitter took the stage at Thalia Hall in Chicago. Before the concert, I had no idea what any member of Pond looked like and would have never guessed that these individuals were the creative minds behind the Australian

‘Artisanal Grunge’ feels necessary on ‘The Courtneys II’

Adam Ramos | Thursday, March 2, 2017

A quick examination of The Courtneys’ facebook page is worth the trip. Vaporwave videos, puppy pics and even a quiz game titled “Which COURTNEY Are You” populate their wall (it’s 17 questions long — I am a “Sydney”). Further probing into the New Zealand via Vancouver sweet punk outfit’s page and you may discover the

Matthew Munhall, Erin McAuliffe, John Darr, Adam Ramos, Kelly McGarry and Matt McMahon | Tuesday, December 8, 2015

1. Kendrick Lamar — “To Pimp a Butterfly” K.Dot’s follow up to “good kid, m.A.A.d city” maintains the same urgency as that album’s personal narrative, but refocuses its subject on more universal questions of black identity. “To Pimp a Butterfly” uses Lamar’s rise to the top of the rap game to explore the ways in

‘Uptown Special’ Proves Unique

Erin McAuliffe | Sunday, January 25, 2015

Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Special,” released Jan. 13, features an eclectic mix of Motown funk, Tame Impala whimsy and Feve frenzy — but, unlike many at Feve, remains coherent and unmuddied. Mark Ronson, British musician and producer for artists such as Amy Winehouse and Adele, collaborated with an array of talent on his latest album. The

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
