Kalemkerian: NFL divisional round predictions

John Kalemkerian | Tuesday, January 18, 2022

Continuing the trend of a great NFL season, Super Wild Card weekend gave us some great results and matchups to look forward to, although three blowouts marginally dulled the hype. From many fans’ perspectives (including this Giants fan), the Saturday and Sunday outcomes were about as good as could be hoped for, with the hated

Kalemkerian: Midseason NFL Power Rankings

John Kalemkerian | Friday, November 12, 2021

Though the NFL’s decision to expand the regular season to 17 games was met with equal parts praise and criticism, there is one benefit that few realized at the time the decision was announced: The new schedule gives us an exact halfway point in the season. Although it seems like the first nine weeks have

The Patriots lost but Belichick won

Thomas Zwiller | Tuesday, October 5, 2021

Never in my life have I associated Adele’s “Hello” with the NFL. After last night’s Sunday Night Football game, I do not think I can unlink the two.  The game featured the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-1) traveling to the New England Patriots (1-2) in a game not expected to be close by most. Vegas set

Kalemkerian: The GOAT That Keeps On Giving

John Kalemkerian | Monday, September 13, 2021

Football is finally back, and with one constant comes another: the inevitable dominance of the GOAT, more commonly known as Tom Brady. As a Giants fan, I have no love lost for Brady. Yet for as long as I’ve been following football, and almost as long as I’ve been alive, an unathletic, unassuming sixth-round draft

McGinley: Brady can’t have all the credit for this Super Bowl victory

Mannion McGinley | Tuesday, February 9, 2021

Hello, it’s me again, your resident Tom Brady over-analyst and still-brokenhearted Pats fan. For the first time in my life, I was content with a Super Bowl champion from the NFC. And, while they wore Buccaneers jerseys last night, “Tommy and Gronky” (as they refer to themselves in their new short — seriously go look,

Zwiller: New NFL powers emerge after Week 9

Thomas Zwiller | Wednesday, November 11, 2020

Going into Week 9, it felt like I had a solid feel for the NFL season. The Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay Buccaneers were the top-tier teams in the NFC. The AFC had the Kansas City Chiefs and the Pittsburgh Steelers as their two top-tier teams. However, coming out of Week 9, I feel awfully

Observer Roundtable: ND-Clemson, Cocktail Party and Michigan looking to rebound

Nate Moller, Patrick Gallagher, Aidan Thomas, Liam Coolican and Dominic Gibson | Friday, November 6, 2020

Last week saw a lot of blowouts, and as such, upset picks were difficult to come by. None of our writers successfully notched an upset prediction, leading to a low scoring week. For the second straight week, Nate Moller was our highest scorer, collecting nine of 12 possible points outside the upset prediction. He’s challenging

McGinley: Patriots nothing if not disappointing on Sunday

Mannion McGinley | Wednesday, October 21, 2020

This weekend, I got to see a true Gronk spike for the first time in a year and a half. I was so excited about it until I reminded myself, once again, that it occurred in Buccaneer Orange and not Patriots Navy. Setting those emotions aside, let me start again. This weekend for the Pats

McGinley: To Gronk, with slightly less love

Mannion McGinley | Thursday, April 23, 2020

Dear Gronk, Rob, if I may What the heck, man? Sad doesn’t even begin to describe how I felt when you retired. You were my sister’s favorite player and the ability you had to get down the field for Tom Brady was unmatched by any offense in the league. To cite a few outstanding plays:

McGinley: To Tom Brady, with love

Mannion McGinley | Wednesday, March 25, 2020

Dear Tom Brady, What the heck, man? I’m hurt. Truly, I’m hurt. I know there are diehard fans, who know more of your stats or who can rattle off every great pass you’ve ever thrown or who can date every heartwrencher out of which you’ve pulled the entire fanbase. But Tom let me ask you

A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
