Asmar Bilal looks to past leaders for motivation

Patrick Gallagher | Friday, November 22, 2019

As fifth-year graduate student, Asmar Bilal reflected upon his collegiate career, he looked fondly upon his time at Notre Dame and said that “it was just a perfect fit.” Any Irish fan would heartily agree with this sentiment as Bilal is a pivotal part of a stout Notre Dame defense and has certainly made the

Kelly confident in young Irish, begins preparation for Louisville

Hayden Adams | Friday, August 23, 2019

The college football season is only days away, with Miami and No. 8 Florida set to kick off the regular season August 24. With 15 practices down in fall camp and a new year of college football just around the corner, Irish head coach Brian Kelly is getting his team ready for the season opener

Irish complete second 12-0 season under Kelly

Charlotte Edmonds | Wednesday, December 5, 2018

It wasn’t always pretty. For every blowout win over Virginia Tech on the road there was a dropped pass on 4th down by Vanderbilt that nearly set the Irish on the path toward another sub-par season. Yet, just over four months later, the Irish have earned themselves a ticket to the College Football Playoff, having

Following Tranquill’s example, the linebacking corps have been a rock for Notre Dame’s defense

Joe Everett | Friday, November 23, 2018

In what has turned out to be a special season for Notre Dame football, perhaps nobody has been as important to the success of the team as two-time captain Drue Tranquill. The graduate student linebacker has been a machine on the field and a mentor off it for the Irish (11-0), as the team has

Edmonds: This season’s defense might be even better than 2012’s

Charlotte Edmonds | Friday, November 23, 2018

As the stakes rise with each Irish win, the parallels between this season and the last two times Notre Dame was undefeated in the regular season are interesting. The 1988 team opened its season with a nail-biting win over Michigan, but went on to dominate its schedule — beating four of the eventual top-seven teams

Moving The Meter: Built on the strength of his relationships, Te’von Coney’s character has led both him and the Irish from disgrace to distinction

Tobias Hoonhout | Friday, November 9, 2018

Full circle. As Irish senior linebacker Te’von Coney comes to the end of a Notre Dame career marked by both highs and lows, it’s easy to see that the Florida native has come a long way, both on and off the field. But, perhaps more surprising, it’s revealing to see his mentality has never changed.

Alohi Gilman offers hunger, experience to stop Navy option attack

Tobias Hoonhout | Friday, October 26, 2018

When Notre Dame faces the vaunted Navy triple-option offense in San Diego on Saturday, a recent staple of the Irish defense won’t be on the field. For all the hype the unit has received under Clark Lea this season, no one on the roster comes close to matching the ability of former Irish linebacker Greer

Irish flip the Stanford script and dominate fourth quarter

Joe Everett | Monday, October 1, 2018

The date was Nov. 25, 2017. The scene was Notre Dame versus Stanford in Palo Alto, California. The time was 1:23 left in the third quarter. Notre Dame’s Justin Yoon had just kicked a field goal to put the Irish ahead 20-17, and the Irish went back on defense — one quarter away from a

Dexter Williams returns as Notre Dame topples Stanford in extensive offensive showing

Charlie Ortega Guifarro | Monday, October 1, 2018

No. 8 Notre Dame broke its three-game losing streak to No. 7 Stanford on Saturday night in dominant fashion as the Irish beat the Cardinal 38-17. Coming in hot off a miracle come-from-behind win at Oregon, Stanford (4-1, 2-0 Pac-12) was hoping to repeat some of the magic in South Bend, but was unable to

Irish secondary shines amidst Notre Dame’s offensive struggles

Mia Berry | Monday, September 10, 2018

On a cloudy Saturday afternoon in South Bend, where temperatures barely rose beyond 65 degrees, there was still one ray of light in Notre Dame Stadium. Despite lackluster weather and offensive play for the Irish, the defensive secondary of juniors Jalen Elliott, Alohi Gilman and Julian Love were dynamic in Notre Dame’s 24-16 win over

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
