Week 4 Notre Dame football grades: Defense has work to do up front

Andrew McGuinness | Wednesday, September 20, 2023

The first quarter of the 2023 season really couldn’t have gotten off to a better start for the Notre Dame defense. The Irish allowed a combined six points in their first two games, then picked off 2021 ACC passing leader Brennan Armstrong three times and allowed just seven second-half points to their first Power Five

Transfer portal additions make a difference against Central Michigan

Annika Herko | Monday, September 18, 2023

It seems fitting that on the same day that former Irish quarterback Tyler Buchner started (and was benched in) his first football game for the Alabama Crimson Tide, the players that transferred into the Notre Dame football program for the 2023 season put together some critical plays for the Irish.   Defensive End Javontae Jean-Baptiste The

Irish set the stage for Ohio State with inconsistent win over Central Michigan

Andrew McGuinness | Saturday, September 16, 2023

It’s generally not a great thing when a football game ends and all a team’s fans can think is “Thank God that’s over.” In fairness to Notre Dame, that sentiment is more a result of what’s to come than what occurred. The latter certainly has some kinks to work out, though. For all of the

Week 3 Notre Dame football grades: Irish secondary takes control late

Tyler Reidy | Wednesday, September 13, 2023

For the third consecutive week, Notre Dame football turned in a commendable performance on defense and special teams. And for the first time this season, it did so against a Power Five opponent. In Saturday’s 45-24 victory at NC State, the Irish limited the Wolfpack to 344 total yards, including just 84 on the ground.

Post: Notre Dame’s secondary rose to first real challenge against North Carolina State

J.J. Post | Monday, September 11, 2023

The buzz was real for Notre Dame’s secondary entering 2023.  The unit had a star in Benjamin Morrison, a consensus freshman-All American who seemed to get better with every game he played as a rookie. Across from Morrison was veteran Cam Hart, who arrived at fall camp in the best shape of his life and

McGuinness: Irish secondary will finally be tested against Wolfpack

Andrew McGuinness | Friday, September 8, 2023

Notre Dame’s first two games this season haven’t come against the toughest competition, to say the least. Navy and Tennessee State went a combined 8-15 in 2022. The Midshipmen have a first-year head coach. The Tigers were the first FCS team to ever play the Irish. Neither has had a winning season in the 2020s.

Week 1 Notre Dame football grades: Defense and special teams get it done

Tyler Reidy | Wednesday, August 30, 2023

On Monday, we graded the Notre Dame offense and its 2023 debut in Dublin. The 42-point thrashing of Navy was met with high marks nearly all across the board. On the flip side, the Irish were up to the task against the Midshipmen’s unique offensive game plan. Limiting the opposition to just three points, which

Roundtable: Previewing the 2023 Notre Dame football season

Andrew McGuinness, Madeline Ladd, J.J. Post, Jose Sanchez Cordova, Matthew Crow and Thomas Zwiller | Friday, August 18, 2023

Another Notre Dame football season is right around the corner. The usual time to settle into campus life before the season begins is brief this year, thanks to a Week 0 trip to Dublin to take on Navy. With the number of days until kick off in Ireland down to single digits, The Observer’s football

McGuinness: Irish defense needs strong start for 2023 to be a success

Andrew McGuinness | Friday, April 21, 2023

For the third straight year, the Notre Dame football team will likely enter the season with a quarterback who has never started a game for the program. And even if graduate student Sam Hartman surprisingly does not begin the year behind center, junior Tyler Buchner does not exactly bring a wealth of starting experience to

Freshmen cornerbacks should help Irish offset losses at DB

Andrew McGuinness | Friday, January 20, 2023

When freshman cornerback Benjamin Morrison was the toast of South Bend after recording five interceptions during a three-game span in November, The Athletic’s Pete Sampson dropped a bombshell that flew a bit under the radar. “Before the Ohio State opener, a source at Notre Dame indicated Morrison might be the best cornerback Notre Dame had

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
