Traveling comedy troupe Second City’s performance at the University’s Washington Hall this past Friday, in many ways, attempted to capture the weight of the question of if one should feel alone in an age that bombards its denizens with constant feedback and constant company. Second City is an improvisational comedy troupe based in Chicago, well-known as

40 years of hits (and occasional misses): ‘SNL 40’

Matthew Munhall | Monday, February 16, 2015

“Saturday Night Live” celebrated its 40th anniversary this weekend with a star-studded, three-and-a-half hour special that aired, ironically, on Sunday night. SNL has always been hit-or-miss, varying wildly in quality from sketch-to-sketch. It’s just that in its four decades as a sketch comedy show, the show has racked up such a collection of highs —

Allie Tollaksen | Wednesday, January 14, 2015

George Clooney is known as a prankster, the Sexiest Man Alive and, of course, an award-winning actor, but he’s also notorious in Hollywood for growing into his role as an activist. From speaking out for gender equality in the documentary “Half the Sky” to getting arrested for protesting in Sudan, Clooney has certainly established himself

Emma Watson UN address

Erin McAuliffe | Thursday, September 25, 2014

Hermione Granger was the original #GirlBoss. A heroine who had book-smarts and wasn’t afraid to show them off or contribute ideas to her sometimes “dimwitted” male counterparts, she was the empowering female figure young girls needed. Hermione not only brought us this enabling fictional character, but she brought out another female role model: the equally

A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
