From the Archives: Rockin’ through the decades: A musical journey at Notre Dame

Thomas Dobbs, Cade Czarnecki and Spencer Kelly | Monday, April 24, 2023

Get ready to rock as we journey through the music history of Notre Dame’s concert scene. From the 1970s to the 1980s, the biggest names in Rock ‘n Roll, country and pop graced the Joyce Center. Some performances left students wanting more, while others left them disappointed. Elvis Presley, Elton John and Bruce Springsteen were

10 things you should never do at a concert

Anna Falk | Thursday, April 20, 2023

As a regular concert goer, I would like to say that I have some authority on proper concert etiquette. At nine years old, I went to my first concert — Interpol and U2 at Acrisure Stadium (formerly Heinz Field). Since then, I’ve been to over 30 concerts, ranging from artists with barely 1,000 monthly listeners

U2 releases special edition Notre Dame ‘Songs of Surrender’ vinyl

Frank Paquette | Friday, April 14, 2023

On Saint Patrick’s Day this year, the Irish rock band U2 released their new album, “Songs of Surrender,” on a limited edition Notre Dame-inspired vinyl. While the tracks on the record themselves are an exciting showcase of the band’s range and timeless quality, the “Notre Dame-ness” of the graphics on the product itself leaves something

Inhaler has ‘Cuts & Bruises,’ but they’ve won the fight

Anna Falk | Thursday, February 23, 2023

I’ve seen U2 in concert three times. Once at Acrisure Stadium (formerly Heinz Field) in Pittsburgh, once at the United Center in Chicago and once at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. While my attendance was largely based on the fact that my parents are giant fans and I wasn’t old enough to stay at

Bono’s moments of surrender

Willoughby Thom | Friday, November 11, 2022

“I was born with an eccentric heart.” Growing up, I listened to a lot of music, and U2 was always on repeat. My father is one of the biggest U2 fans you will ever meet. In addition to collecting their records, watching their concert films and learning all about their history, my father has seen

Long time no see! The time has come to grace Viewpoint with a very Scene-esque Inside Column! In accordance with my last Viewpoint pieces — “Video didn’t kill the radio star” (2020) and “Public service announcement: revive the music scene” (2021) — music is at the forefront. Over the past few months, I have become an

The doctor prescribed Inhaler

Willoughby Thom | Wednesday, November 13, 2019

Three things you need at a concert: a good concert buddy, an open mind and an Inhaler. On Sunday, Dublin-based band, Inhaler, graced the stage at the Subterranean in North Chicago. The Subterranean, sandwiched between a dental clinic and cafe on North Avenue, looked nothing more than a run-down club with a haphazard marquee, but

Nora McGreevy, Trevor Canty, Owen Lane and Alvaro del Campo | Friday, April 21, 2017

Well, “DAMN.” Kendrick Lamar’s newest album has the Scene department buzzing for a whole variety of reasons — so much so that we couldn’t limit ourselves to just one article. Today, four of our writers give their short and sweet takes on various aspects of this multifaceted and undeniably important new project. If you still can’t get

Darn, these features are good

Erin McAuliffe and Jack Riedy | Thursday, April 20, 2017

Kendrick Lamar has an iconic discography — so iconic that it somehow manages to stay unmarred by his shaky collaboration history. Taylor Swift, Adam Levine, Robin Thicke and Imagine Dragons all successfully recruited him for their tracks — we couldn’t have composed a more unfortunate list if we tried. However, on “DAMN.” Lamar has total

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
