The COVID-19 pandemic has taken over college campuses in the last two years. Notre Dame has instituted countless safety precautions in place to remedy this issue, and now, the impact of these measures is being studied to test the effectiveness of the University’s overall response.  The research was conducted by the Children’s Environmental Health Initiative

Words, words, words

Letter to the Editor | Thursday, February 10, 2022

A Letter to the Editor published on Feb. 7 highlighted some of the percolating frustrations among the student body concerning vaccine and booster mandates. This was a refreshing opinion piece, because while I see these same frustrations being talked about on the national level, rarely have I seen students willing or able to discuss them

Pandemic culture war

Krista Lourdes Akiki | Tuesday, October 26, 2021

I have noticed that in the past couple of months everyone around me seems to speak of the pandemic in the past tense. This is particularly true within the Notre Dame bubble. We’ve all been ecstatic at the idea of a normal semester. But we seem to forget that this situation does not mirror itself

What didn’t make the cut

Rejection letters. We all get them, we all hate them. This week, I stumbled upon Rejection Letters, a literary magazine that publishes … fictional rejection letters. Satirical, heartbreaking, artistically-inclined rejection letters. What a concept!  I was inspired, looking for a Viewpoint column idea and still cooling off from my last inbox disappointment. As is written

Guidelines for the safe consumption of sadness

Mike Donovan | Wednesday, April 26, 2017

If you were to take a tour of my headspace, you’d probably get lost in the vast collection of pop culture references, meticulously organized to describe the effects of hopeless romanticism and sporadic solipsism on my otherwise pleasant life. At the end of the tour, you’d wonder why I would spend so much time thinking

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
