‘No last call tonight’: Mike Brey takes home win as Irish upset Pitt in final home game

Liam Coolican | Thursday, March 2, 2023

It didn’t matter that Notre Dame had won just two conference games all season. It didn’t matter that they were facing the top team in the ACC. For one magical night, the Irish delivered an inspired performance to send off Mike Brey and the six graduate students who have meant so much to this program

Untimely cold stretch buries Irish in Wake Forest loss

Tyler Reidy | Monday, February 27, 2023

Notre Dame’s men’s basketball would like to snap its lengthy losing skid before Mike Brey moves on. However, the team is running out of time to get it done. On Saturday, the streak reached seven games in a 66-58 road loss to Wake Forest. The Irish were competitive for much of the contest, but faded

Irish fall short against Duke despite electric performance from Goodwin

Nicolas Morles | Wednesday, February 15, 2023

Despite a valiant effort by the team, Notre Dame men’s basketball fell to Duke 68-64 in an away matchup in Durham, North Carolina. After a strong drive into traffic, star freshman guard J.J. Starling was able to cut Duke’s lead to just one point with just 36 seconds left to go in the game. This

Irish look to put last-second loss behind them against Virginia Tech

Matthew Crow | Friday, February 10, 2023

On Wednesday night, Notre Dame men’s basketball had perhaps their most disappointing game of the season. Playing against Georgia Tech in Atlanta, the Irish had a chance to knock off the Yellow Jackets for the second time this season and win their first road game of the year. The game went back and forth all

Irish seek first road win against Yellow Jackets

Liam Coolican | Wednesday, February 8, 2023

The last time Notre Dame took on Georgia Tech, the mood in South Bend was hopeful. The Irish had emerged with a come-from-behind, 73-72 overtime victory at Purcell Pavilion. It seemed, after five straight losses to open conference play, they were primed to turn the season around.  It was hard to believe that a team

Irish fall in second half against Wake Forest, drop to 2-10 in ACC

Nicolas Morles | Monday, February 6, 2023

Entering this matchup against Wake Forest, Notre Dame hoped to make last week’s game against Louisville a building point that could flip momentum for the team rather than an outlier for the season. In the first part of the game, that appeared to be the case. With under 10 minutes to go in the half,

Irish look for more late-season life against Demon Deacons

Andrew McGuinness | Friday, February 3, 2023

There can be something freeing in sports about letting go of expectations. A season that began with fairly high hopes for the Irish men’s basketball reached the point of no return a while ago. Probably even sooner than when legendary head coach Mike Brey announced 2022-23 will be his final season on Jan. 19. The

Matthew Crow | Friday, January 27, 2023

On Tuesday night, Notre Dame men’s basketball suffered a narrow road loss against an NC State team that will likely be playing in the NCAA Tournament. Irish edged out by NC State on the road

Matthew Crow | Wednesday, January 25, 2023

On Tuesday night, Notre Dame men’s basketball traveled to Raleigh, North Carolina, looking to snap a three-game losing streak. For 40 minutes, the Irish battled, fighting back from several big deficits to keep within reach up until the final seconds. Ultimately, it was not enough, as the NC State Wolfpack surged down the stretch to

Irish to take on Eagles after thirteen-point loss to Seminoles

Tyler Reidy | Thursday, January 19, 2023

Notre Dame men’s basketball (9-10, 1-7) returns to action on Saturday for another ACC battle with Boston College (8-11, 2-6). Both teams are looking to escape the league’s basement after poor starts in conference play. The Eagles check in on a four-game losing streak after playing their most difficult stretch of the season. After beating

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
