To my letter writers

Evy Stein | Thursday, September 5, 2019

Dear Notre Dame, Saint Mary’s and Holy Cross community members, The time has finally come for my inside column, and while I’ve been reading these for almost three years as an Observer employee, I’ve felt stumped this week. My peers have written about the everyday, the extraordinary and their pet peeves, but the most excited

Today’s music is great

Jake Winningham | Friday, April 12, 2019

Last week, one of my colleagues at The Observer wrote a column titled “Today’s music is terrible.” In it, Hayden Adams described what he sees as problems within contemporary pop music, and pines for a return to the halcyon days of Huey Lewis and Queen. I respectfully disagree with Mr. Adams, though, and think that

Ranking the campus’ breakfast sandwiches

Charlie Kenney | Thursday, September 13, 2018

Bad DART times often go hand in hand with one thing for a quite large contingent of students across campus — no time for lunch. Often only 15, 20 or 30 minutes is allotted to this cursed bunch. It’s far less than enough time to walk to the dining hall, select your food and get

Observer Editorial: On censorship and discourse

Observer Editorial Board | Monday, August 27, 2018

On Friday, a column entitled “The statistics on Dreamers are a nightmare” ran in the Viewpoint section of The Observer, generating both discussion and outrage among readers. We as an Editorial Board understand the responses to this column, but we do not regret publishing it. We are a nation of people with many opposing viewpoints.

Cheers to the Gateway year

Claire Rafford | Monday, April 16, 2018

“What dorm are you in?” It’s a question that Notre Dame students ask each other frequently — in classes, at parties, in nearly every social introduction. Almost everyone reading this article probably has, at most, a three-word response. For me, it’s a little different. I didn’t get into Notre Dame. Instead, after a harrowing two

A drama-free Thanksgiving

Charlotte Edmonds | Thursday, November 30, 2017

I, like many, am a survivor of Thanksgiving 2016. That fateful holiday, which just celebrated it’s one year anniversary, left many with their own harrowing stories and some dreading that same reunion this past week. Those from a relatively like-minded or small family might be confused by this nightmare I speak of but almost anyone

Three dinner guests

Lucy Collins | Thursday, April 20, 2017

For Easter Break this year, a couple of friends and I decided to drive up to Canada for a few days to experience a new city. Leaving campus at 5:30 p.m. for an eight hour road trip meant we had to take creative measures to make sure we all stayed awake for the duration of

This is not a viewpoint

Letter to the Editor | Friday, November 4, 2016

This is not a viewpoint. It contains no opinion, belief, theory, or observation of any kind; it says nothing. Absolutely nothing. If it did, perhaps it would have opened with a witty aphorism to grab your attention and ease you into the piece. Or maybe a poignantly relatable observation would win you over, draw you in with a

What is the purpose of education?

Benjamin Padanilam | Wednesday, August 31, 2016

Recently in one of my classes, this was a question that came up tangentially to the topic we were discussing. We had just read a lecture that discussed education and a worldview as divided into “Two Cultures”: one defined by scientific intellectuals and another defined by literary intellectuals. And as another academic term gets underway

Aidan Lewis | Wednesday, April 6, 2016

Notre Dame students continued the campus-wide conversation about income inequality Tuesday night at a discussion hosted by BridgeND, featuring panelists Mimi Teixeira, Natasha Reinfenberg, Liam O’Connor, Raymond Michuda and Armani Niko Porter. (Editor’s note: Each of the panelists have previously submitted columns or letters to the editor about income inequality to The Observer’s Viewpoint section. BridgeND

Joseph R. Biden has become the second Catholic President in United States history, but his position on abortion is “one that cannot be condoned” according to Rev. Robert Dowd.

“Other bishops think that, because he’s a conscientious Catholic whose faith is obviously important to him, we should strike a more positive tone, particularly at the outset of his presidency. After all, in many ways Biden’s positions are more in line with Catholic teaching than Trump’s, particularly when it comes to migrants, refugees, climate issues, poverty and inequality,” Dowd continued.
