On Monday night, by a vote of 4-3, the board of the South Bend Community Schools Corporation (SBCSC) voted to “right-size” the school district and close Clay High School, citing the concerning number of open seats — 2,400 and projected to grow — in district-wide high school enrollment. Gun sense is common sense in this election

After news about the shooting in Uvalde, Texas, Hank Milius picked up his wife, a retired fourth-grade teacher, from the airport. He could tell that she had not yet heard the news and made sure that they did not listen to the radio or watch TV. He wanted to give her “one night of blissful

I believe in the American voter

Clark Bowden | Thursday, October 15, 2020

Donald Trump may be one of the best things to happen to America. Now for those of you who have read my columns before (a number I’m fairly certain I could count on two hands), you know me to be a left wing bleeding heart liberal … and you’d be correct. So my opening sentence

Democratic socialism now

Crystal Ramirez | Tuesday, October 13, 2020

It was during Bernie Sanders’ initial run for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016 that I became better acquainted with the term democratic socialist, and was intrigued by the idea of a socialist government. Bernie’s platform was especially appealing to an individual like me, a middle to lower class college student, in debt with no

You’ve got mail

Maeve Filbin | Thursday, August 13, 2020

I realized I forgot a few things at home: toothpaste, Scotch tape, my rain coat. After six months of living at home, packing for college was a major extraction effort. Assembling my dorm necessities felt like climbing out from under a rock. What else did I need to re-enter the real world outside of quarantine?

Election day

Patrick McKelvey | Tuesday, November 6, 2018

You should vote today. Today is Election Day. Finally. I don’t know about you, but I was getting a little tired of Senator Joe Donnelly’s wood chopping ad that airs every 20 minutes. I didn’t want to see another second of some negative ad campaign about candidates who hate guns or want to cut your

Observer Editorial: Become a voter

Observer Editorial Board | Tuesday, November 6, 2018

Voting matters, and your vote counts. On Midterms Day 2018, The Observer Editorial Board urges you, reader, to be a voter. This year’s Midterm elections arrive on the heels of some of the most polarized years in American politics, and the national divisiveness over politics has echoed throughout our smaller tri-campus community. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
