The midterm elections: voting rights and gerrymandering

Grace Sullivan | Thursday, October 27, 2022

With the recent overturn of Roe v. Wade, drastic climate disasters and increasing political polarization among U.S. citizens, the midterm elections are essential in determining our government’s ability to take on these issues. As Amber Phillips said in her article about the importance of the midterm elections, this election has the power to reshape our

Make all voices count

Letter to the Editor | Monday, October 4, 2021

If you were perpetually consigned to choose between stale pancakes or runny scrambled eggs each morning, would you not develop an aversion towards breakfast? For avid followers of international affairs, 2021 has been a terrific year for observing and learning about the ways things are done differently, as voters in countless countries scattered across the

In a recent opinion piece, Mike Pence wrote that “after a year in which our nation has endured a global pandemic, economic hardship and a contentious election, now is not the time to further inflame passion and division. The case for civic engagement on college campuses

BridgeND | Wednesday, September 23, 2020

As the 2020 election looms and the first debate nears, many college students across the country are voting in a presidential race for the first time. While voting looks different this year due to COVID-19, it is crucial — perhaps more important that ever — to ensure we are still able to cast our ballots.

Votes for women

Sara Schlecht | Wednesday, August 19, 2020

I have a confession to make. I spend a ridiculous amount of time thinking about my favorite parts of the Constitution. It’s definitely my most patriotic tendency — and one that I use to distract myself from disillusionment at the current state of American politics. As a student journalist, I absolutely love my First-Amendment rights.

Why vote?

Andrew Sveda | Monday, February 24, 2020

Ah, the administration — that thing everyone loves to hate. It’s no secret. Go into Duncan or LaFun, start namedropping “Father Jenkins” or “Erin Hoffmann Harding” and you’re bound to hear some pretty impassioned rants. So when it came time to vote in the student body election over the past two weeks, I just assumed

Don’t give up on the Voting Rights Act

Jordan Ryan | Thursday, August 27, 2015

An extremely fine line exists between proper federal authority and an imposition upon states’ Constitutional rights, especially when it comes to voting laws. While voter ID and absentee voting laws dominate the media, these are all propelled by one piece of legislation — one that was recently changed: the Voting Rights Act. The effects of

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
