21st century auteur fanboys

Nick Brigati | Monday, February 22, 2021

When I saw Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” in theaters last fall, the first time I had stepped in a cinema since the pandemic began, I was disappointed. The dialogue was inaudible, there was a tiresome amount of exposition (surprise, surprise) and of course, as is the biggest problem with many of Nolan’s films, it lacked any

‘Isle of Dogs’ is a charming, fast-paced delight

Owen Lane | Monday, April 23, 2018

Wes Anderson’s films are unmistakable. If you see a movie with highly symmetrical framing, bright primary color schemes and Bill Murray, your natural assumption would either be that you are watching a Wes Anderson movie or some sort of blatant Anderson knock-off. His films are easy to appreciate, but not necessarily easy to love. Particularly,

The Principles of Twee: A Beginner’s Guide

Mike Donovan | Friday, November 18, 2016

Cultural movements hit the youth psyche like violent ocean swells. They crash furiously onto populated shores, submerging everybody and everything in their path. Then, after a few moments, they recede back into the ocean as rapidly as they came. Before long, another wave hits, and the process begins again. In the midst of the voracious

hYpE Week: Kanye West, The Father of Rap’s New Sincerity

Matt McMahon | Tuesday, February 9, 2016

It’s really no wonder the mash-ups on the Kanye Wes Anderson Tumblr fit together so naturally. Despite the apparent diametrical stylistic opposition between the two, both musician Kanye West and filmmaker Wes Anderson create their individual works in the post-postmodern mindset of New Sincerity. Eschewing the cynicism and irony of the previous generation, the two embrace the

Amazon’s campy, evocative ‘Red Oaks’

Erin McAuliffe | Monday, November 2, 2015

Amazon Instant Video released the original comedy “Red Oaks,” a campy, 80s-based summer-fun series, at the beginning of October. The series stars Craig Roberts, the Welsh actor who starred in Richard Ayoade’s indie “Submarine,” who carries over his angsty “not a boy, not yet a man” woes to the small screen as David in this 10-episode series.

Envisioning Wes Anderson’s theme park

Erin McAuliffe | Monday, November 10, 2014

Could “Moonrise Kingdom” become the next Magic Kingdom? It could if Wes Anderson collaborates with Mark Mothersbaugh as he announced he intends to in the foreword of Mothersbaugh’s art book, “Myopia,” released earlier this week. “I hope to soon secure the means to commission the construction of an important and sizeable theme park to be

Wes Anderson’s ‘Grand Budapest Hotel’ A Grand Time

Kevin Noonan | Monday, March 31, 2014

You had me at “Wes Anderson.” One of last fall’s highlights on Saturday Night Live was a sketch featuring the fake trailer for “The Coterie of Midnight Intruders,” which parodied Anderson’s movies and their idiosyncratic and stylistically-unique nature. It featured a one-off joke quoting a fake New York Times review of the film, saying, “You

Joseph R. Biden has become the second Catholic President in United States history, but his position on abortion is “one that cannot be condoned” according to Rev. Robert Dowd.

“Other bishops think that, because he’s a conscientious Catholic whose faith is obviously important to him, we should strike a more positive tone, particularly at the outset of his presidency. After all, in many ways Biden’s positions are more in line with Catholic teaching than Trump’s, particularly when it comes to migrants, refugees, climate issues, poverty and inequality,” Dowd continued.
