Putting the wonder back in winter

Liz Schutter | Friday, February 3, 2023

“There’s no snakes. There’s no alligators. There’s no hurricanes.” I repeat this strange string of sentences to myself daily, typically while trudging through the snow to get to class during winter. I say it every time I question my choice of college, since I could’ve gone somewhere warmer than the Midwest. Typically I conjure up

Reflections on snow

Jonah Tran | Monday, November 21, 2022

I have seen snow less than 10 times. Nine times to be exact. My first time was years ago while snowboarding at Big Bear Mountain in California. The other eight times were at Notre Dame.  Snow is still a novel idea to me. I vaguely remember what snow is like from the trip to California,

Christmas starts now

Caitlin Brannigan | Wednesday, November 16, 2022

I love looking out my window and being greeted by a winter wonderland. I love curling up in my bed with a book and a cup of hot chocolate. I love making snow angels and flailing around on the quad, hurling snowballs at my friends until our fingers are numb.  That said, my brain is

On a winter afternoon

Abby Patrick | Wednesday, January 19, 2022

I honestly don’t know what to write this column about. Typically I only have to write one of these per semester, and I usually pick a later date, storing up ideas until then, to make sure that when my turn comes, I have something halfway decent to say, something interesting and inspiring enough (to me)

Nothing compares to Christmas break

Lina Domenella | Wednesday, February 26, 2020

As spring break approaches, students excitedly talk about their plans and trips, myself included. I can’t wait for a week off from school in warm, sunny Florida. But as I think back to all of the other times that we’ve had off school, there is nothing like the memories of Christmas break: The snow crunches

‘I make trouble to move change’: Saint Mary’s student speaks out about campus inaccessibility

Gina Twardosz | Wednesday, February 19, 2020

Saint Mary’s has a long history of accommodating many students with disabilities who pursue an education at the College, but Natalie Davis, a senior who navigates Saint Mary’s campus in a wheelchair, feels the College is not doing enough to make the campus accessible for students with physical disabilities.  For four years, Davis has been

You don’t have to live in an overheated room

Natalie Weber | Thursday, January 16, 2020

In early fall, the radiator in my room began hissing. I had lived in Cavanaugh for three years, and was used to all the creaks and moans of an old building, but the insistent whir of the radiator concerned me nonetheless. I texted a few friends to complain, and asked if they experienced anything similar.

Saint Mary’s Costume Shop collect clothing for Winter Wear Drive

Marirose Osborne | Thursday, February 14, 2019

While many residents in South Bend layer themselves in thick sweaters and warm jackets to stay cozy in the cold weather, not everyone is so fortunate as to have the clothing necessary to stay safe as temperatures drop below freezing. It was with these people in mind that Melissa Bialko, the head of the Costume

Winter winds

Campus Ministry | Monday, February 4, 2019

I can’t help but notice how the weather outside parallels my experience coming back to Notre Dame for the spring semester. After a wonderful Christmas vacation followed by a beautiful weekend with students on the Becoming Retreat, the following days were like a snowy, uphill climb to get the semester up and running. The grind

Winter reflections

Joe Everett | Friday, November 30, 2018

“Man, this weather is so nice for November.” I wasn’t talking about South Bend, Indiana. Not a chance. Rather, I was in Los Angeles this past weekend covering the game for The Observer, and let me tell you the weather was gorgeous. Highs in the upper 60s with a slight ocean breeze, sun shining overhead

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
