Three Irish skaters nominated for prestigious Hobey Baker Award

Ryan Murphy | Friday, January 27, 2023

As this weekend’s important conference series against Wisconsin approaches, three Notre Dame skaters have been nominated for college hockey’s most prestigious award. But don’t tell them that.  With the Irish in the thick of the hunt to make the NCAA Tournament, individual awards are not at the forefront of their minds. “I didn’t know it

Up-and-down Irish look to stabilize against Badgers

Andrew McGuinness | Friday, January 27, 2023

No matter who they play or what they do, Notre Dame hockey has been unable to escape the seesaw that their 2022-23 season has become. Since Nov. 11, the Irish have played seven two-game series against the same opponent, and they’ve split all seven. It doesn’t matter whether the Irish are playing teams at the

A controversial column

Bella Laufenberg | Monday, November 7, 2022

An inside column can be many things: Funny, cliche, informational, emotional, controversial or otherwise. When I realized (a bit too late) that I had an inside column due this Sunday, I had a decision to make.   I’ve already covered funny-ish when I told the campus that I was using Taylor Swift’s Red to recover from

Whoever, you are, wherever you are, breathe. Feel better? After an insane four weeks of Notre Dame, there is a lull in the season courtesy of an early bye week. The Irish are at an unexpected 2-2 record, and with this bye comes a chance for both fans and the team to collect their breath

J.J. Post | Friday, September 2, 2022

No. 16 Notre Dame women’s soccer grabbed a statement win Thursday, romping 4-1 over No. 22 Wisconsin at Alumni Stadium.  A frustrating first half saw the Irish control possession and rack up chances to the tune of a 9-1 advantage in shots. But they couldn’t find a goal for their troubles. However, just 15 minutes

Notre Dame hopes to continue shut-out streak against No. 22 Wisconsin

J.P. Gschwind | Thursday, September 1, 2022

An undefeated No. 16 Notre Dame women’s soccer team returns home to play No. 22 Wisconsin Friday. While the Irish have so far come out victors, the Badgers are a highly ranked team, and it will not be easy to maintain their unbeaten streak.  Currently, the Irish are in a good position both defensively and

Ten songs to help stop Notre Dame from ripping off Wisconsin’s ‘Jump Around’

Ryan Peters | Friday, November 12, 2021

When Notre Dame debuted the light show against USC, it not only caught the Notre Dame Stadium atmosphere up to modern times but it even started to distinguish it. With the “Hell’s Bells” intro and the light show at the end of the third quarter, the environment was not only electric relative to Notre Dame’s

Hungry for more: Jayson Ademilola sparking Irish defensive turnaround

Aidan Thomas | Friday, October 1, 2021

When talking about the Notre Dame defensive line prior to the 2021 season, the storylines frequently, and understandably, revolved around two key returning starters — graduate students Kurt Hinish and Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa. They did not tend to focus on a senior defensive lineman from New Jersey with one career sack over three years in the

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
