McGuinness: Previewing the 2020 World Series

Andrew McGuinness | Monday, October 19, 2020

Even baseball’s biggest detractors have to admit that this year’s postseason has been pretty great. The larger-than-usual field didn’t dilute the quality of play in the later rounds, as this year’s tournament was just as — if not more — exciting than most, even if fans have only been allowed to attend the NLCS and

Moller: The legitimacy of a 60 game season

Nate Moller | Wednesday, August 26, 2020

It’s the question all baseball fans are asking: Can a 60-game season with an expanded postseason really show us who the best team in baseball is? It’s a complicated question, and I don’t believe the answer is a clear yes or no. The decision by MLB to expand the postseason to eight teams per league

Coolican: Examining tanking in baseball

Liam Coolican | Wednesday, February 26, 2020

As spring training gets underway, I, like every other fan, am hopeful my team will make it to the World Series. As much as I want to believe that, however, I have to realize that my team, the Detroit Tigers, is “rebuilding” — or in language the team won’t use, tanking. Tanking — losing games

Naatz: Don’t give up on the Nationals

Tom Naatz | Tuesday, October 29, 2019

On May 24, my family sat in stone cold silence as the Washington Nationals hit their 19-31 nadir. We’ve been fans since the team arrived in 2005, and never had we seen a season with such high expectations crash and burn so quickly. Eventually, my mom — an eternal optimist — broke the silence: “I

Mulvena: Honeycutt, Los Angeles should take cues from Boston fans

Connor Mulvena | Friday, October 26, 2018

After game one of the 2018 World Series at Fenway Park, when left-hander Clayton Kershaw looked like a shadow of his regular season self, Dodgers pitching coach Rick Honeycutt had some issues with the Fenway bullpens. “Brutal. Pretty brutal,” Honeycutt said of the bullpens. “What I don’t understand is why baseball allows it. You’ve got

Hoonhout: The Dodgers and their depth pose a real threat to the Red Sox

Tobias Hoonhout | Tuesday, October 23, 2018

Don’t get me wrong — what the Boston Red Sox have done this postseason is impressive. While they were the best team in the Majors this year, the Sox had their work cut out for them to get back to World Series for the first time since 2013, facing not one, but two 100-win teams

Ivey: Don’t forget about the White Sox

Michael Ivey | Wednesday, November 1, 2017

On Oct. 24, the ESPN Stats and Info Twitter account tweeted an attempt to show how dominant the Los Angeles Dodgers have been in the postseason leading up to the World Series. The tweet read: “The Dodgers are 7-1 this postseason. The 1998 Yankees are the only team in the Wild Card Era to win

Everett: What we can learn from Game 2

Joe Everett | Friday, October 27, 2017

Wednesday night’s Game 2 of the World Series between the Dodgers and Astros was one for the history books. Not to be cliche and overexuberant, but it was truly nothing short of epic. If you didn’t watch it and haven’t watched the highlights yet, do yourself the favor of watching the insane and awesome spectacle

Ivey: Sports will continue to heal after disasters

Michael Ivey | Wednesday, October 25, 2017

On Saturday night, the Houston Astros defeated the New York Yankees in Game 7 of the ALCS and clinched the franchise’s first trip to the World Series since 2005. Beginning Tuesday night, the Astros will play the Los Angeles Dodgers in the best-of-seven Fall Classic for a chance to win their first World Series championship

Carson: I’m fine, it’s fine, the Indians are fine

Alex Carson | Monday, November 7, 2016

At some point, the reminders will go away. The local news stations will stop running ads congratulating the Cubs, the O’Neill stall notes will stop making jokes about Cleveland, kids will surely but slowly stop wearing Cubs hats and jerseys to lunch at South Dining Hall. Today is not that day, tomorrow likely won’t be either,

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
