Thomas: Gator Bowl, recruiting drama puts spotlight on Irish safeties

Aidan Thomas | Wednesday, December 28, 2022

Safety has long been a position of strength for Notre Dame football. Six former Irish safeties currently populate NFL rosters, three as starters. For the three seasons prior to 2022, Notre Dame enjoyed the services of Kyle Hamilton. Hamilton racked up eight career interceptions in two-and-a-half seasons (missing the last half of 2021 due to

McGinley: Irish defense did not pass go to collect $200 — dual-threats did

Mannion McGinley | Monday, November 28, 2022

Notre Dame football has been a defense-oriented program for most of its history. From the Miami pass breakup in 1988 and the goal line stand in 2012, to this year’s BYU fourth down stop and the Clemson routing that featured both a pick-six and a blocked punt; there have been games won by the Irish

‘You can really see that love we have for each other’: Irish ride stellar start on senior day

Andrew McGuinness | Saturday, November 19, 2022

As Notre Dame struggled through its first month of the season, the biggest criticism of the team was the lack of an identity. First-year head coach Marcus Freeman has talked about this all season, and perhaps nothing stood out more today. A resurgent run game that emerged in October started to change things. But there’s

Keys to victory: What every Irish position group must do against Oklahoma State

Aidan Thomas | Friday, December 31, 2021

On Saturday, Notre Dame gets an opportunity to accomplish a feat they haven’t done in 27 years. After four straight Fiesta Bowl losses, the Irish have a chance to start the Marcus Freeman era off with a bang in Glendale, Arizona. “This is the new beginning of a new era — the Freeman era,” junior

Prepare for (potential) greatness, Notre Dame

Emily DeFazio | Tuesday, November 16, 2021

Did anyone else see Logan Diggs absolutely vault over that UVA defender? The play immediately brought me back to the infamous Najee Harris hurdle over former Irish defender Nick McCloud in the 2021 Rose Bowl; only this time, it was one of Notre Dame’s guys that did the leaping. What a nice change of pace

‘It’s the expectation’: Ramon Henderson shines in new role for Irish

Aidan Thomas | Monday, November 15, 2021

A flu bug ripping its way through the locker room. No All-American safety Kyle Hamilton. Two more defensive captains in graduate student defensive lineman Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa and senior linebacker Drew White out with high fevers. Forced to prepare for two different quarterbacks against a third straight opponent with an extra week of rest than the

With some key departures in a position that was already questionable for the Irish, it will be vital for some new, young wide receivers to step up for the Irish in 2021. Adams: Why is it so hard to get Jordan Johnson and Xavier Watts on the field?

Hayden Adams | Wednesday, February 17, 2021

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — On Jan. 2, 2021, University of Kentucky redshirt freshman guard Dontaie Allen hit seven three-pointers in a 78-73 overtime win over Mississippi State. No, don’t go anywhere. You’re in the right place (assuming you’re here for a Notre Dame football discussion). The reason I bring up that Kentucky basketball business is

Adams: Setting the record straight on my ND football takes

Hayden Adams | Wednesday, February 10, 2021

Here we go again. Alright, I’ve put out two columns now that have elicited negative responses for my takes on not trusting Brian Kelly in 2021, an admittedly rash piece, and the debate over developing young talent or trying to make the CFP next season — a more thought-out piece that somehow managed to earn

Irish able to bolster recruiting with current play, upcoming commitment

Hayden Adams | Friday, September 18, 2020

Recruiting is a year-round endeavor for college football coaches. And, although the recruiting dead period has been extended through Jan. 1 by the NCAA, thus prohibiting any official or unofficial visits or evaluation days, there are other ways for Notre Dame to impress incoming recruits. One such avenue, according to Irish Breakdown publisher Bryan Driskell,

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
