Tyler Reidy | Thursday, March 9, 2023

For Notre Dame baseball, the long grind of conference play begins this weekend. The Irish (5-4) will visit Georgia Tech (11-2) for the first time in four years to kick off the 30-game slate. Though Notre Dame never played dominant baseball through its first three series, head coach Shawn Stiffler is not too worried with

Notre Dame baseball preview: redefining the attitude around Irish baseball

Adam Akan | Friday, February 10, 2023

When one thinks of Notre Dame athletics, they are likely to conjure up images of a kickoff at Notre Dame Stadium, a packed Purcell Pavilion erupting after another Notre Dame three-pointer or the gold helmets skating about Compton Ice Arena. They may even note Irish fencing’s dynasty or Notre Dame soccer’s recent runs in the

Notre Dame loses 5-1 to Texas A&M, falls short in Omaha

Jose Sanchez Cordova | Tuesday, June 21, 2022

Notre Dame baseball fell 5-1 to Texas A&M at the College World Series, ending their season and phenomenal postseason run. Ultimately, a career-defining performance from the Aggies’ starter and some unforced errors doomed the Irish in Omaha. It was a great starting frame for junior pitcher Liam Simon on the mound, as he struck out

After 2021 heartbreak, a new wave of contributors carry Irish to College World Series

Andrew McGuinness | Sunday, June 12, 2022

KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE — There were plenty of smiles to go around for the Irish on Sunday. From the dugout the team streamed out of to celebrate graduate student catcher David LaManna and junior third baseman Jack Brannigan’s game-changing seventh-inning home runs to the pitcher’s mound where they dogpiled to celebrate clinching the program’s third-ever College

Irish tee off on Tennessee in series opener, one win away from College World Series

Andrew McGuinness | Saturday, June 11, 2022

KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE — The Tennessee Volunteers entered the NCAA Super Regionals as not just the No. 1 seed in the entire nation, but arguably the country’s most complete team. After all, they entered the weekend leading the NCAA in runs scored and earned run average. Every Volunteers hitter in Friday’s starting lineup carries a .300

David LaManna has the best seat in the house for Notre Dame’s pitching-led rise

Andrew McGuinness | Friday, June 10, 2022

KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE — Even though they had already scored three runs, it did not feel like the Tennessee Volunteers offense really came alive on Friday until the sixth inning. A sacrifice fly or a couple of scattered solo home runs is one thing. But Lindsey Nelson Field was rocking when Jared Dickey stroked a two-out

Irish two wins from Omaha, face monstrous, Knoxville-sized task

Aidan Thomas | Thursday, June 9, 2022

361 days. When the first pitch of the Knoxville Super Regional is thrown, that’s how long it’ll have been since Notre Dame was in its last Super Regional. Last year, at 9:15 p.m. on June 14, Irish slugger Niko Kavadas grounded into a double play, ending Notre Dame’s comeback attempt. They dropped Game 3 of

Findlay shuts it down, Irish advance to regional final with 6-4 win

Aidan Thomas | Sunday, June 5, 2022

Confident and relentless. That’s what Notre Dame graduate student catcher David LaManna said the Irish would be at this Statesboro Regional. And through two games, it’s hard to argue the fact. Nobody embodied the confidence and relentlessness more than true freshman Jack Findlay on Saturday night. Notre Dame head coach Link Jarrett called upon the

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
